In order to become a coding specialist you have to gain your coding certification that validates you as a specialist.
A transcriptionist listens to physician dictation and types/transcribes the document for permanent placement on the patient’s chart. Most transcriptionist works remote. There is a certified transcription specialist certification you can obtain to be known as a specialist.
A DRG Validator is relatively new specialized HIM profession that requires the coder to review patient records post billing. The coder is looking for trends in care for select DRGs that have an impact on the medical facility reimbursement the most. This position usually requires an RHIA, RHIT or nursing certification.
The tumor registrar studies the morphology of malignant tumors from its first detection. The documentation discovered by the tumor registrar can aid in treatment and research. This profession also has a certification that identifies the registrar as a specialist.

To become an RHIA specialist you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited HIM program. To make your four year degree a certified specialist you have a sit for your RHIA management certification.
HIM professional with a RHIT certification usually hold the position of a coding manager or supervisor in a medical record department. To become a specialist you have to sit for the RHIT certification exam. This is an associate degree program.
